Database migration from on-prem to cloud typically is a massive project for any organization because of manual work involved, potential for errors and the short window of downtime that teams get for migration. SCM makes cloud database migrations a lot cheaper and faster. Since SCM migrations are automated, migrations are error free and are massively scalable. SCM always works in conjunction with ScaleArc’s core capabilities such as Load Balancing, Query Caching and Failover that allow you to perform live testing and cut over to the cloud database without any disruption to production applications.

Database migration from on-prem to cloud typically is a massive project for any organization because of manual work involved, potential for errors and the short window of downtime that teams get for migration. DMS automates parts of the migration but the process is still largely manual. As a result, even with DMS, cloud migration is manual, time consuming and error prone. SCM is built on top of DMS and ScaleArc - you get all the goodness of SCM, greatness of ScaleArc Load Balancing capabilities and full automation. With all that, SCM delivers cheaper, faster, scalable, error free database migrations to the cloud without any disruption to production applications.

With SCM, you can migrate from MySQL 5.5, 5.6, 5.7 to MySQL 5.5, 5.6, 5.7, from SQL Server 2005-2019 to SQL Server 2005-2019 and from PostgreSQL 10.x, 11.x to PostgreSQL 10.x, 11.x.

You can typically complete migration within days to weeks (compared to 6 months or more with manual migration). Even databases of massive scale can be migrated in days. Validation of migrated databases may take a little longer depending on the complexity of database schemas but that is entirely in your control.

When you migrate with SCM, your data never leaves your environment - it resides in your on-prem environment and in your cloud environment. SCM may require external resources but that still ensures that your data remains in your own environment. Basic setup may share your schema with ScaleArc. In addition, if you request SCM to validate your data, your data will be shared with ScaleArc. If you prefer zero sharing, please request an advanced setup in your own cloud environment.

No. You cannot rollback after the cutover because your database would have captured new data that did not exist at the time of cutback. However, during the cutover if something goes wrong, SCM automatically rolls back.

No. SCM can scale to any size.

When you migrate databases with SCM, your applications will work through ScaleArc - which has proxy and load balancing capabilities. You’ll just change your DNS records to point to ScaleArc and ScaleArc in turn will handle connection management. That way, you will never have to change your applications.

With SCM, you can migrate without any disruption to your application. The downtime could be a few minutes depending on your cut over plan. Even in that case, you can take advantage of ScaleArc ‘Surge Queue’ to minimize or eliminate the downtime completely.

With SCM, chances of migration failure are slim. Whether the migration fails or if you want to stick to the on-demand database a little longer (say until you test your application), you can configure ScaleArc to route all your traffic to the on-prem database. You can keep routing traffic to on-prem until you are ready to switch over. You can even slowly dial up the traffic that goes to the cloud database.

You can decommission the source database as soon as you cut over to the cloud database using ScaleArc.

It may create a few temporary tables to facilitate migration but SCM will clean up those tables as soon as the migration is complete.

  • You may need someone from your team to provision ScaleArc. The SCM team can guide any of your team members through that process.

The license is for 1 source server to 1 destination server. You can migrate the same database to the same servers as many times as you like (for testing, beta, going live etc.)

How do you define a ‘database’?

For the purpose of the ScaleArc Cloud Migration license, a database is defined as a hardware or virtual machine based Database server (or a cluster) with one database endpoint (aka URL) ~= equivalent to a physical database. It may contain any number of schemas (aka logical databases).

The following items are included in the list price for SCM.

  • License to migrate one database server using the ScaleArc Cloud Migration.
  • License to use core ScaleArc during the migration.
  • 40 hours of consulting to support customers during the migration.

With SCM, you can migrate unlimited amounts of data. Your price is not impacted by the volume of data migrated.

Once you start migration, it should not take more than a few weeks at most. You can plan the timing of your migration as per your needs. We expect the migration to be complete within one year. If you need more time, we’ll be happy to work with you.
