AWS Cost Management Made Easy

The typical manual database migration takes >6 months and is error prone. Switching over databases requires downtime and teams typically get a very short window to migrate and test. As a result, migrations fail multiple times before they succeed. With ScaleArc Cloud Migrations your team gets a completely automated, error free migration which can be completed in less than 4 weeks.

AWS Cost Management Made Easy
Schema Support

ScaleArc cloud migrations support not just basic schema but complete schema migration without any downtime. It provides support for additional schema elements such as Synonyms, Auto-increment, User defined data types and Unique Constraints.

AWS Cost Management Made Easy
Cutover Without

With continuous replication and ScaleArc proxy you can test your applications as long as you need and then switch over only when you are ready. With ‘no disruption cutover’, you can cutover to the cloud database without causing disruption to production applications.

AWS Cost Management Made Easy

Before you cutover you need to test your applications as long as you need and switch over only when you are ready. During this time traffic is routed through the ScaleArc proxy that enables you to control traffic without making any code changes to the application.

AWS Cost Management Made Easy

During the migration, source and destination databases are often not in sync during the migration process. Using the continuous replication capabilities in ScaleArc databases can be in sync through real time replication. When you cutover, there is no disruption to the production application.

AWS Cost Management Made Easy

Enterprises are often faced with challenges in migrating vast amounts of data efficiently and effectively from their on-premises data storage environments to AWS. ScaleArc scales effortlessly to migrate massive volumes of data with ease.

Why Customers Love Us

Database Migrations Made Easy

Ashish Reddy Konda
President Engineering

The research to identify ScaleArc as the best solution was exhaustive, while, ironically, the actual migration was easy. Minor data-compatibility issues were resolved in mere minutes, and we achieved considerable savings over other options.

The ScaleArc Cloud Migration platform paid for itself many times over with this single project. We knew this needed to be done but had been putting it off simply due to the resources it would have required – without being sure of a positive result. ScaleArc made it happen.

All Your Product Questions Answered

Why do I need ScaleArc Cloud Migration when I can migrate databases manually?

Database migration from on-prem to cloud typically is a massive project for any organization because of manual work involved, potential for errors and the short window of downtime that teams get for migration. SCM makes cloud database migrations a lot cheaper and faster. Since SCM migrations are automated, migrations are error free and are massively scalable. SCM always works in conjunction with ScaleArc’s core capabilities such as Load Balancing, Query Caching and Failover that allow you to perform live testing and cut over to the cloud database without any disruption to production applications.

Why do I need ScaleArc Cloud Migration when I can migrate databases using AWS Database Migration Service (DMS)?

Database migration from on-prem to cloud typically is a massive project for any organization because of manual work involved, potential for errors and the short window of downtime that teams get for migration. DMS automates parts of the migration but the process is still largely manual. As a result, even with DMS, cloud migration is manual, time consuming and error prone. SCM is built on top of DMS and ScaleArc - you get all the goodness of SCM, greatness of ScaleArc Load Balancing capabilities and full automation. With all that, SCM delivers cheaper, faster, scalable, error free database migrations to the cloud without any disruption to production applications.

What databases does Scale Cloud Migration support?

With SCM, you can migrate from MySQL 5.5, 5.6, 5.7 to MySQL 5.5, 5.6, 5.7, from SQL Server 2005-2019 to SQL Server 2005-2019 and from PostgreSQL 10.x, 11.x to PostgreSQL 10.x, 11.x.

With SCM, how long does it take to complete database migration?

You can typically complete migration within days to weeks (compared to 6 months or more with manual migration). Even databases of massive scale can be migrated in days. Validation of migrated databases may take a little longer depending on the complexity of database schemas but that is entirely in your control.

What kind of data privacy does SCM offer?

When you migrate with SCM, your data never leaves your environment - it resides in your on-prem environment and in your cloud environment. SCM may require external resources but that still ensures that your data remains in your own environment. Basic setup may share your schema with ScaleArc. In addition, if you request SCM to validate your data, your data will be shared with ScaleArc. If you prefer zero sharing, please request an advanced setup in your own cloud environment.

Can I rollback my database after the cutover?

No. You cannot rollback after the cutover because your database would have captured new data that did not exist at the time of cutback. However, during the cutover if something goes wrong, SCM automatically rolls back.

Is there any limit on the size of the database that I can migrate?

No. SCM can scale to any size.

How does SCM migrate databases without requiring any changes to the application?

When you migrate databases with SCM, your applications will work through ScaleArc - which has proxy and load balancing capabilities. You’ll just change your DNS records to point to ScaleArc and ScaleArc in turn will handle connection management. That way, you will never have to change your applications.

When I migrate databases with SCM, what kind of downtime should I plan for?

With SCM, you can migrate without any disruption to your application. The downtime could be a few minutes depending on your cut over plan. Even in that case, you can take advantage of ScaleArc ‘Surge Queue’ to minimize or eliminate the downtime completely.

What happens when migration fails?

With SCM, chances of migration failure are slim. Whether the migration fails or if you want to stick to the on-demand database a little longer (say until you test your application), you can configure ScaleArc to route all your traffic to the on-prem database. You can keep routing traffic to on-prem until you are ready to switch over. You can even slowly dial up the traffic that goes to the cloud database.

When can I decommission the source (on-prem) database?

You can decommission the source database as soon as you cut over to the cloud database using ScaleArc.

Does SCM make any changes to source or target databases?Does SCM make any changes to source or target databases?

It may create a few temporary tables to facilitate migration but SCM will clean up those tables as soon as the migration is complete.

When I plan migration with SCM, what kind of team and resources should I plan?

Here are some things to consider in terms of teams:

  • DBA to set up cloud database, taking backups, connect on-prem and cloud databases with ScaleArc
  • A team that can validate your database and your application.
  • You may need someone from your team to provision ScaleArc. The SCM team can guide any of your team members through that process.

What resources would this process consume?

  • DMS instance
  • Traffic
  • ScaleArc servers

Is core ScaleArc required to perform Cloud migration or is ScaleArc Cloud Migration an entirely different product?

ScaleArc Cloud Migration (SCM) is an add-on to the core ScaleArc. SCM leverages ScaleArc capabilities to deliver migration and cut over capabilities. For that reason, ScaleArc is required for SCM. However, ScaleArc license may be included as part of your SCM license.

All Your Pricing Questions Answered

Flat migration fee of $100K per database

This flat fee per database includes license and consulting hours to get your database migrated

The license is for 1 source server to 1 destination server. You can migrate the same database to the same servers as many times as you like (for testing, beta, going live etc.)

How do you define a ‘database’?

For the purpose of the ScaleArc Cloud Migration license, a database is defined as a hardware or virtual machine based Database server (or a cluster) with one database endpoint (aka URL) ~= equivalent to a physical database. It may contain any number of schemas (aka logical databases).

What’s included in the SCM price?

The following items are included in the list price for SCM.

  • License to migrate one database server using the ScaleArc Cloud Migration.
  • License to use core ScaleArc during the migration.
  • 40 hours of consulting to support customers during the migration.

Is this a fixed price or does this change based on the volume of data we migrated?

With SCM, you can migrate unlimited amounts of data. Your price is not impacted by the volume of data migrated.

Once I purchase a SCM license, how long do I have to complete the migration?

Once you start migration, it should not take more than a few weeks at most. You can plan the timing of your migration as per your needs. We expect the migration to be complete within one year. If you need more time, we’ll be happy to work with you.
